Have questions about our program before applying? Find answers to some frequently asked questions below.

Are there any classes I can take prior to enrolling in the program?
Yes, you may take MFT 701 (Intro to MFT), MFT 759 (Family Dynamics), and MFT 763 (Family Systems). All other courses require you to be a student enrolled in the program.

Can I take classes part time?
To complete the program in less than three years, students must go full time, meaning nine credit hours per semester, including summer. Students should take no less than six credit hours per semester. Admission preference is given to full time students.

What is the passing rate of those students taking the marriage and family therapy licensing exam?
The passing rate of UNLV graduates from 1989 to May 1999 was 78 percent as compared with the state-passing rate of 62 percent. Since the November 1999 exam, our graduates have passed at a rate of 100 percent through March 2002.

What type of experience will I get while in the program?
Students receive experience through practicum and internships. Marriage and family students receive experience in seeing individuals, couples, and families. Supervision is provided with all practica and internships. Students are trained using videotape for all sessions and have opportunities for live supervision with the use of one-way mirrors and intercoms within the therapy rooms.

How long does the program take?
The master's degree program takes 2 ½ years. The certificate program takes approximately 1-1 ½ years, depending on which courses the student needs for licensure.

What are the important dates to know?
The deadline for applying for admission is Jan. 10. Interviews for those selected from the pool of applicants take place in March or early April. Please see the Graduate Catalog for other important dates to know.

How do the program and the Center for Individual, Couple and Family Counseling interact with the community?
The Center for Individual, Couple and Family Counseling and the department provide mental health services to the community through research, collaboration, and the services provided by student counselors.

When would I start the program after being admitted?
The program begins the fall after being admitted.

What will my schedule look like once I begin the program?
Didactic courses are offered between 1 and 3:45 p.m. Your clinical work will generally occur from 4 to 9 p.m. In order to meet the needs of clients and to acquire the requisite 500 clinical hours, students see clients Monday through Thursday from 3 to 9 p.m. in the Center for Individual, Couple and Family Counseling.
