Interested in a career in marriage and family therapy? UNLV's program welcomes applications from students who aspire to work with individuals, couples, families, and groups on mental health or behavioral, personal, and/or relational concerns.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: JANUARY 10

Get started by following the admissions process below.

  1. Review application requirements
     
  2. Complete and submit a letter of intent (PDF)
     
  3. Complete GRE record exam
    • Score a 450 minimum on verbal and quantitative scales, taken within the last five years.
    • Send results directly to the department (Code: 3045)
      *Note: Only applicants possessing doctoral degrees are exempt from the GRE requirement).

  4. Complete admission application (PDF)
     
  5. Complete and submit two essays
     
    • Personal Autobiographical Statement and Professional Goals
      Write a brief, autobiographical essay outlining your personal and family background and how your experience has led to your decision to pursue a career as a marriage and family therapist. Please include a discussion of your professional goals. (Please type – four-page maximum.)
       
    • Essay on Ethics and Morality
      Write a brief essay in response to the following statement: "The society in which we presently live has redefined ethics in such a way that it is separate from morality. This separation of ethics from morality decreases the importance of morality and moral behavior in our lives and in society – much more than when ethics and morality were linked." (Please type – two-page maximum.)

     
  6. Mail official transcripts of all undergraduate/previous graduate work directly to the department (No copies or unofficial student copies will be accepted):

  7. Submit three letters of recommendation
    Ideally, these recommendations should come from professors, professionals in the mental health field, and/or employers who can address your qualifications and potential for graduate study, the field of marriage and family therapy, or both. (Friends, family members, and acquaintances are not acceptable references.)
     
  8. Applicant interview
    Upon review by the faculty Admissions Committee, a select group of applicants will be invited to participate in day-long interviews on campus.
